Actually, piracy is at an 18 year low, but holding crews for ransom is at an all-time high. Obviously, autonomous vessels without crews would eliminate this risk. Furthermore, computers could lock down critical steering functions, cargo bays, and alert authorities automatically in case of pirates. The big risk is hacking, and diverting precious cargo to rendezvous points for ferrying. This is also the big opportunity for software companies…
